The Antibiotic Guardian scheme
The Antibiotic Guardian scheme was launched by Public Health England in 2014 to help healthcare professionals and members of the public ensure that antibiotics work now and in the future. They were asked to pledge to take one action which will ensure that antibiotics can continue to be effective.
Our commitment to the fight against antibiotic resistance
In 2016 we joined the Antibiotic Guardian scheme. Both our Pharmacy Manager and Infection Control Lead have signed up to be Antibiotic Guardians. Their role is to monitor the prescription of antibiotics by ensuring that patients understand the dose and duration of their course of antibiotics, and to encourage them to return any unused medication to the Pharmacy.
The role also involves sharing knowledge around antimicrobial resistance. Our clinical staff have specific training in pre-admission screening of patients and all staff undergo annual infection control training to ensure that they understand how to keep themselves, colleagues and our patients safe.
